Description

Youth Day commemorates the Students Uprisings that took place in Soweto on June 16 1976. Police and students clashed in a protest march against using Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools. Hector Pieterson was one out of hundreds of other school children that were shot by police and died. He became a symbol of the anti-Apartheid protests by the Youth of Soweto and the brutality they all faced by the Apartheid government. These brave students are commemorated at the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum in Orlando West, Soweto.

Lebo's Soweto Backpackers will on this day celebrate the youth of today in Soweto. Together with youth NGO's and our own Youth Club we will showcase youth talent in drama, music and dance. Come and experience South African culture performed by talented youth!

Learn more about the history of the struggle in Soweto by joining us for a Bicycle Tour of Soweto that takes you to different communities and historical sites, including the Hector Pieterson Memorial.
